Handicraftsmen at the Traditional Sausage Festival in the village of Astei

Within the festival held January 11, 2014 in the village of Astei a handicrafts exhibition and fair was organized by the Ukrainian-Hungarian Regional Development Centre. The festival began with the traditional pig slaughter and the pig scorching.

While the guests waited for the preparation of pork dishes, they could taste the famous wines of the local wine makers, as well they could admire the products of the prominent Transcarpathian handicraftsmen, such as Gizella Orosz weaver, Erzsébet Pocsai corn husk weaver, Árpád László cooper, Csilla Anicka crochet maker, Tünde Dancs potter, Györgyi Antal cross stitch embroiderer, Ilona Ködöböcz-Gerzsenyi jewelry crafter, András Héder and István Galajda woodcarvers.

All of them are the participants of the project titled the „Promotion of folk-arts and handicrafts in Carpathian Euroregion HUSKROUA/1101/163” supported by the European Union within the Hungarian-Slovakia-Ukraine-Romania ENPI 2007-2013 program. The applicant of the project is the Ukrainian-Hungarian Regional Development Centre, its partner organization is the Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg County Village Tourist Association.

Tha main aim of the Traditional Sausage Festival is to represent the local traditions to the tourist regarding the gastronomy, as well the folk art. Thanks to the craftsmen, all participants could try out how the weaving loom works or how to make a barrel. The following similar event will be the International Butcher Festival on 24-25 January 2014.
